English Language Immersion  

Winter Program 2018 

Program Overview: 

The English Language Immersion program facilitated by Lourdes Global Education Services and Marquette Catholic High School engages students in English language learning and American cultural exploration. The curriculum is rooted and structured around academic objectives.  


Program Objectives: 

Students will increase their knowledge of the English Language through reading, writing, listening and speaking opportunities in and out of the classroom. 

Students will increase their knowledge of American culture, local geology and history through hands-on experiences, field-work and cultural immersion. 

Students will increase their knowledge of the American post-secondary educational system through college and university campus visits.


Program Tuition:   

The program tuition includes room, board, bed & bath linens, activities, local, airport and activity transportation, college visits, classes, access to Rosetta Stone Language Learning, field experiences, chaperones, internet, resources and materials. This price does not include transportation expenses to and from China.



Additional Information: 

On campus adult facilitator and chaperone at all times  

Off campus facilitator and chaperone assigned to all trips, field experiences, and activities 

Marquette’s campus is located near beaches, dunes, Lake Michigan, shopping, transportation to Chicago and South Bend, a hospital, church, and fire department
 
Lourdes Student Center is located on the North Side of Chicago in the UpTown Neighborhood. 

1 chaperon for every 10 students 

Located near outlet shopping mall: Polo, Coach, Guess, Nike and much more 

All meals and snacks provided 

English Language Learning and American classroom experiences 

Wireless Internet Access 

Access to fitness facility and gymnasium 

Physical activities include: basketball, volleyball, skating, skiing, hiking, traveling, etc. 

Students will attend day tours in Chicago experiencing  its architecture, museums and college campuses. 

Dress: formal attire for traveling, warm coat, snow boots, hats, gloves, casual wear, gym shoes and comfortable clothing (average temps 25-35 degrees Fahrenheit) 

English as a New Language Class (ENL)

Trips and experiences with American students and local community 

Dinners and activities with Marquette High School students 

Chinese/English translators 

Students should bring spending money: personal shopping, gifts, souvenirs 

*Please know students will have the opportunity to spend one week on campus at Marquette Catholic High School and one week in Chicago at Lourdes Student Center.

Day 1: Arrival 

Arrival Flight (To Be Announced): from Beijing Capital (PEK) to Chicago 

Delegation arrives at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. The delegation will be greeted by program facilitators. The delegation will board a school bus and travel to Michigan City, Indiana (1 ½ hours). The delegation will assemble at Marquette Catholic High School for a welcome meal, orientation, local tour, organization, rest, and acclimation. 


6:00 p.m.  Welcome dinner/with Marquette student guests 
10:00 p.m.   Lights Out 



Day 2: Orientation

Students will attend Marquette High School with a shadow partner for the day. Lunch and additional special activities will be coordinated for our guests. 

7:30 a.m.  Breakfast 
8:00 a.m.  Students will take a local walking tour of Lake Michigan Beach. 
9:30 a.m.  Campus tour 
10:15 a.m.  Student shadows assigned, student interviews and introductions activity   (Global Center), ENL Class, teacher introduction 
12:30 p.m.  Lunch-Students will have lunch with entire student body   
1:15 p.m.  Class-Students will attend 2 class periods with shadow host students. 
3:10 p.m.  Residence/Free time/Snack 
5:45 p.m.   Dinner-American BBQ 
7:00 p.m.  Girls Varsity Basketball Game @ Marquette 
10:00 p.m.  Lights Out 



Day 3: ENL & Chicago Bulls Basketball Camp 

Students will engage in English Language Learning activities and participate in a basketball camp led by former Chicago Bulls player Cliff Levingston. They will also have time for shopping and attend an evening boys varsity basketball game at Marquette.

12:30 p.m.  Basketball Camp 
5:45 p.m.   Dinner @ residence

Day 4: Notre Dame & Art Class 

Students will engage in English Language Learning activities and participate in an art class. They will travel to South Bend, Indiana to visit Notre Dame University. 

7:30 a.m.  Breakfast 
9:00 a.m.  Depart for Notre Dame 
12:30 p.m.  Lunch-Notre Dame 
3:00 p.m.  Art Class 
5:45 p.m.   Dinner @ residence 
7:00 p.m.  Shopping/Free Time 

10:00 p.m.  Lights Out 


Day 5: Shadow Day
 
Students will attend Marquette High School with a shadow partner for the day. Lunch and additional special activities will be coordinated for our guests.

12:30 p.m.  Lunch-Students will have lunch with entire student body   
3:10 p.m.  Residence/Free time/Snack

Day 7: University of Chicago & Museum of Science and Industry 

Students will travel to Chicago and visit the University of Chicago. They will then visit the Museum of Science and Industry and attend an IMAX feature film.

8:30 a.m.  Depart for University of Chicago 
11:30 a.m.  Lunch-downtown 
12:30 p.m.  Depart Museum of Science and Industry & IMAX 
5:00 p.m.   Arrival Lourdes Student Center

10:00 p.m.  Lights Out



Day 8: Shedd Aquarium and Willis Tower Skydeck 

Students will visit the Shedd Aquarium and the Willis Tower Sky Deck.

12:30 p.m.  Lunch-at museum 
1:30 p.m.  Depart for Willis Tower, Sky Deck 
3:30 p.m.   Lourdes Student Center

Day 9: Art Institute of Chicago & Millennium Park 

Students will visit the Art Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park.

2:00 p.m.  Millennium Park (ice skating) 
6:30 p.m.  Dinner @ Lourdes Student Center

Day 10: Shadow Day 

The delegation will attend Marquette High School with a shadow partner for the day. Lunch and additional special activities will be coordinated for our guests.

Day 11: Field Museum Chicago 

Students will visit the Field Museum of Chicago

6:30 p.m.  Dinner @ Lourdes Student Center

Day 12: Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier & Chicago Dinner 

Students will have a walking tour of Chicago’s Miracle Mile and Navy Pier. 

8:00 a.m.  Breakfast 
9:00 a.m.  Walking Tour

1:00 p.m.  Navy Pier 
5:30 p.m.  Dinner in Chicago 
10:00 p.m.  Lights Out 


Day 13: Open Day 

The delegates will plan their day and activities with program coordinators.

10:00 a.m. Cooking Lesson with School’s Chef
12:30 a.m. Lunch
1:00 p.m. Local Shopping to make final purchases
6:00 p.m. Award and Certificate ceremony
7:30 p.m. Pack and Prepare foe departure

Day 14: Departure 

Students will depart for O’Hare International Airport.
